Philippe Vautier and family lived on Wellington Terrace from about 1876 until c1884 when they moved to Foxton in the Manawatu. They leased the two houses to the left of the gap on the near side of the Terrace. This site had a commanding view over the town. They were named La Retraite and Kinkora and were on site (lot 484) which is now between the James Cook Hotel and the Cable Car Terminal.
